PAT focuses on service development

Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) is ready to upgrade its services and organization to be High Performance PAT focusing on its efficiency and reliability in the international level.

As ports are an important portal of entry from all over the world PAT is trying to develop its services to be ready for more shipments and business expansion and targeting itself as a High Perfomance organization according to Khun Chalermchai Meekun-Iam, the managing director of PAT.

PAT has outlined its main strategies as follows:

  1. To develop its port in Bangkok in order to support short sea shipping routes as in the future it is believed that the regional shipping route in Asia would be a hub-and-spokes service and feeders will be much used for shipments.

  1. To develop the transportation and logistics system and get it much networked. This is to focus on the multimodal services with full efficiency.  Rail and sea transports will be the major ones. 2 container terminals at the Bangkok port have been set up in order to reduce the sea transportation cost. Moreover the projects to develop its ports and the rail facilities at Laem Chabang are adopted.

  1. To develop and sustain the transportation and logistics network in the region for the increase of business and shipment volumes and to offer more service options to customers. PAT is to be prepared for the new business development such as transportation network in the region and border trade with neighboring countries.

  1. To be prepared to manage the second Chiang Saen Port in Chiang Rai province replacing the present port. Manpower and one stop service are the major concerns. The second Chiang Saen Port will be ready for all services on April 1, 2012.

  1. To coordinate and work with PTT Public Co., Ltd. on developing some pieces of land at Ranong Port in Ranong Province to be a duty free petrol cargo. This is to support the petroleum exploration and production for export. This will help reduce the cost of transportation and give more safety to shipments.

  1. To focus on both corporate governance and corporate social responsibility of its organization in order to enhance its capability in business competition and to give all staff opportunity to realize social responsibility and join any related activities.

Main projects to enhance PAT’s capabilities

Khun Chalermchai disclosed that PAT has been trying to develop many aspects to enhance its service capability and logistics system to support sea transport and reduce some cost. In 2012 PAT has targeted to improve its logistics network to promote rail and sea transports in accordance with the logistics policy and implementation plan of the country.  Terminal A, the rail transfer terminal and the phase 3 port at Laemchabang are to be developed.

E-PORT

PAT is planning to develop its services and standard into an e-port level. Related IT system, hardware, software such as the front office service, the container terminal management system (CTMS), the vessel and cargo management system (VCMS), e-toll, e-gate including the back office system such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) and the office automation system (OA) have been set up and used, networked with the e-custom system of Customs Department.

Regional Hubs of Sea Ports

To make our posts as regional hubs more handling equipments have been used at Ranong Port to create more convenience and reduce some costs while Chiangsaen Port is targeted to be a one stop service port. Both Bangkok and Laemchabang Ports are now aimed to be green ports with the green port policy and implementation plans.
